Medicinal Cannabis

Over 23,000 studies now support the benefits of medicinal cannabis. Currently, more than 60 international health organisations support granting patients immediate legal access to medicinal cannabis under a doctor’s supervision. Why does medicinal cannabis benefit so many different illnesses? The short answer is that it does this by working with the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which controls symptoms in the body. The cannabis plant is one of the most pharmacologically active plants on the planet, containing over 400 active chemicals which are called cannabinoids.

The most relevant and understood components of cannabis for patients today, which hold significant health benefits are Cannabidiol (CBD) and Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

Why does medicinal cannabis benefit so many different illnesses?

The short answer is that it does this by working with the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which controls symptoms in the body. The cannabis plant is one of the most pharmacologically active plants on the planet, containing over 100 active chemicals which are called cannabinoids.

The most relevant and understood compounds of cannabis for patients today, which hold significant health benefits are Cannabidiol (CBD) and Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).

THC is a cannabinoid which is the psychoactive compound in marijuana and is responsible for the "high" people feel. THC is analgesic, antioxidant, antispasmodic, anxiolytic (decreases anxiety), appetite stimulant, euphoriant, reduces vomiting and nausea, inhibits cancer cell growth, and neuroprotective effects.

CBD is a cannabinoid considered to be non-psychoactive and has a wide scope of medical applications. This compound is a mild analgesic, anti-inflammatory antioxidant and has been linked to alleviating symptoms associated with irritable bowel disease, epilepsy, diabetes, fibromyalgia and more.

The Entourage Effect is when these two cannabinoids work together, or independently to provide a wide variety of therapeutic benefits to the human body. Combining CBD and THC cannabinoids to make different CBD:THC ratios creates a different physical or psychological impact than a single compound on its own. Globally it is understood that tailored cannabinoid formulations are far more effective and consistent, and will make up a large portion of mainstream adult cannabis consumption in the future.
